The group was made up of elderly women living in an area where organic food is not as available as in the big city. The group realized that many seniors did not have access to enough nutritious food. The traditional meals offered at nursing homes and other institutions were often costly. They wanted to provide a more economical alternative for senior citizens.
Many of these women had suffered nutritional deficiencies as children, and some even had learning disabilities. Therefore, it was essential for them to start developing healthy eating habits early in life and learn how to grow and prepare different foods to eat a varied and healthy diet. The goal was to try to increase the number and varieties of vegetables and fruits they consume. To be successful in their mission, the group needed to learn about the benefits of organic food from various sources. The ultimate plan was to compile a book on organic gardening for women, including a gardening recipe book, organic vegetable gardening guide, organic vegetable planting guide, a detailed discussion of the difference between organic and non-organic vegetables, the importance of using fertilizers and free time gardening, as well as a meeting of the uses and benefits of fruits, vegetables, legumes and meats.
At first, the plan would be a small project for the women to try to grow and prepare some vegetables. However, as the project went along and the women learned more about organic food and how to prepare different foods, they knew they wanted to expand the project and create a community garden. So, the women decided to invite several neighbours to join the effort, dividing up the work. The women would each make a small plot of land and divide it into several smaller plots, planting different vegetables.
Over two years, they planted and had several fruit trees, vegetables, herbs and flowers to share. A couple of the women became so successful that they even developed their organic recipes and organic garden. They now have their websites and are selling their products through the Internet. They can sell their organic products at farmer markets and online. The park has turned into a business, and the women are living well.
